Jean-Baptiste Fauvelet

Jean-Baptiste Fauvelet was born in Bordeaux on June 9th, 1819 and died March
14th 1883. He was a painter and a lithographer.

Fauvelet studied painting under Pierre Lacour1 and then under Meissonier. He was a professor of art the collège de Chartres.

Fauvelet first exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1845 and nearly every year thereafter until 1870. He received 2nd class medal at the Salon of 1848.

The full title is “Ascanio, ciseleur florentin du XVIe siècle, élève et ami de Benvenuto Cellini” Exhibited at the Salon of 1850. Oil on Panel. 22 x 16 cm. Signed “Fauvelet”

In the collection of the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, France.

It was purchased in 1850 by the “Musées nationaux”. After 1851 it was at the Musée du Luxembourg, Paris. On March 23, 1920 it was moved to Sénat, Paris. On the 8th of July 1998 it went to the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Orléans. On August 26th, 2008 it went to the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.

“Partant pour la ville— Un des premiers, M. Fauvelet a signé des Messonier d’un autre nom que Messonier. M. Fauvelet excelle dans les étoffes, Les habits de velours, les culottes de satin, les bas blancs, il se tire de tout cela à merveille. Il sait faire chatoyer la lumière surles tissus lisses, l’endormir sur les tissus mats ; il est de très grande entente pour les clairsétroits du velours, le lustré mat du drap, le moiré lumineux de la soie. Sauf la tête de son voyageur, fort mauvaise, c’est peint finement, et bien peint.”

Pheasants

Painted in or before 1855. In the collection of the Wallace Collection, London. Oil on Panel. Signed “Fauvelet”. 16 x 20 cm.

The Wallace Collection’s description:

The birds have been identified as golden pheasants. Painted in or before 1855, the year in which the comte de Pourtalès-Gorgier died. It was at the sale of his collection that the picture was bought by Lord Hertford. Fauvelet was a lithographer and a painter principally of still life and historical genre scenes in the manner of Meissonier who exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1845 to 1870.

This is a watercolor and graphite on paper. It is in the collection of the Walters Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. Signed “Fauvelet” and dated March 1862.

Provenance according to the Walters:

William T. Walters, Baltimore [date and mode of acquisition unknown]; Henry Walters, Baltimore, 1894, by inheritance; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest.

It was exhibited in The Essence of Line: French Drawings from Ingres to Degas. This exhibition toured The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore; Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore; Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham; Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma. 2005-2006.

Likely painted after 1865. Oil on Panel. 25.5 x 18.5 cm. Possibly on of the two portraits exhibited at the Salons of 1869 or 1870. In the collection of the Musée National Magnin, in Dijon France.

Peintre de genre, Fauvelet aima représenter des figures de jeunes femmes pensives et assises dans un intérieur. Mais la facture un peu raide et maladroite de cette oeuvre invite à la prudence. Par ailleurs, la signature est différente de celle habituellement utilisée par Fauvelet, en lettres capitales. R. Davray-Piekolek souligne qu’il s’agit d’une représentation très bizarre, qui évoque un “retour de bal” ou une femme “séduite et abandonnée”, avec les gants sur le sofa et le bouquet par terre, mais elle ne porte pas de bijoux et l’étoffe de la robe est quelconque. La coiffure et la coupe de la chemise sont du Second Empire, mais la robe est impossible à dater. Ce portrait a donc peut-être été peint vers 1865-1870 (communication écrite, août 2011).
